questionnaire.

The BBC Songs of Praise programme on the theme of 'Promises' will be transmitted on the 20th March 2011 (not 30^th as previously announced). This will include a short piece with presenter Sally Magnusson about commitment to one's faith and taking the example of Eric Liddell to illustrate this point.

Wonderful Visit

We have had word from Carmen Demarco after her groups visit to see the stained glass windows, she says, “Thank you all for the wonderful visit we had to the Centre yesterday on behalf of myself and the members of the Exploring Edinburgh group. Your knowledge, enthusiasm and hospitality made the day a joy and I look forward to bringing further groups to visit in the future. Eric Liddell - his Christian influence continues

BBC Songs of Praise are currently producing a programme on the theme of 'Promises' to be transmitted on the 30th March 2011. This involves filming a short piece with presenter Sally Magnusson about commitment to one's faith and they are taking the example of Eric Liddell to illustrate this point.

Readers will also be interested to know that Eric’s daughters have agreed to be interviewed for a programme about their father that will be broadcast in China, in addition they are supporting the BBC in the production of a programme for school assemblies.

Stained Glass tour

A local citizens group will enjoy a tour of the Centre’s beautiful collection of twentieth century stained glass windows today.

The tour will be led by Sue Tritton, one of the Centre’s trustees.

We are pleased to report that Ms Julie McEwan has accepted the E L Ca(I)re Programme Manager post. Julie is currently working for Age Scotland where she has gained substantial knowledge of carer issues through the regular contact that she has with them. Her past experience includes roles at Capability Scotland and two year long teaching assignments in China. Julie is looking forward to beginning her new role in March. We are very grateful to Hazel Lyons who is doing so much to ensure that the Spring Programme of courses is offered on schedule alongside an Information Day and Open Day. Carers attending these days will have the opportunity to meet Julie.

The Centre is pleased to welcome Mrs Evelyn Buddie to her voluntary role
as Helping Hand Administrator. Evelyn will be available at the Centre
every Thursday and will develop her role as the "first point of contact"
for anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer helper in the
Centre. She is excited about her role and is looking forward to
assisting more people to find suitable voluntary positions in the
Centre's programmes. We are sure that her warm and friendly personality
will be a real bonus to the Centre.

Snow Chaos

We have unfortunately had to make the decision to shut the centre at 5pm today due to the persistent weather conditions.

This means that the following classes have been cancelled;

1) Ali Williams' Pilates Class
2) Elaine Thompson's Pilates Class
3) Scott Reid's Aikido Class

All will be up and running as usual tomorrow at 9am.

Day Care for People With Dementia in Edinburgh

The Eric Liddell Centre operates a day care service for people with a diagnosis of dementia in South Edinburgh. A team of full time staff with a variety of backgrounds and experience and highly skilled volunteers provide person centred day care services to people with dementia. The aim of the service is to support people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible

New Fundraising Appeal

We are excited to announce that we have launched a capital appeal to raise funds for alterations to our building aimed at:

Improving access to our building.
Increasing our capacity to help people with disabilities.

The total cost of the project is £248,000 and we intend to raise this money from charitable trusts, our members and the local community in Meadows, Morningside and Marchmont.

Fundraising Event on 6th November

On Saturday 6th November we are hosting an evening of Indian Classical music to raise money for the Eric Liddell Ca(i)re Programme which helps carers from across Edinburgh. New Book About Eric Liddell

Steven Metcalf, whose was in the internment camp with Eric Liddell as a boy has written a book called "In Japan the Crickets Cry".

Proposed Improvements to the Eric Liddell Centre

We are planning to make some alterations to our building to improve accessibility. This includes moving the reception desk, fitting electrically operated doors and building a new wheelchair ramp. We are also planning to make a window where the big door to Holy Corner is located and make a room behind it. The planning application has been fast tracked by the council because it is disability related.

New Care Commission Report

Our Day Care Service was inspected by the Care Commission in March and the report has just been published. We scored 5 (very good) for both areas checked: quality of care & support and quality of staffing.

Behind the Eric Liddell Centre there is a disused garden that very few people know about. We are currently approaching local companies to see if they would redevelop it as a community project. Funding News

The Eric Liddell Centre is awaiting formal confirmation of its funding from the City of Edinburgh Council. Current indications are that funding will remain at the same level as last year with no cuts to our day care service or the Ca(i)re programme.

Carers may be interested to know that funding for the Ca(i)re Programme is being moved from Children and Family Services to the Health and Social Care department. We would like to thank Children and Family Services for their support in previous years. We would also like to thank all the people who contacted the council about the need for our services during the budget discussions.

Mr Alan Bilton

Mr Alan Bilton former member of Christ Church Morningside and company secretary for 18 years at the Eric Liddell Centre from its creation in 1980 until his retirement in 1998 died peacefully in hospital at 7:50am on 11th January 2010. His family members were at his side.

On 10th December the Eric Liddell Centre hosted the switch on of the Merchiston Christmas lights in conjunction with the Merchiston Community Council. The lights were switched on by former rugby international Scott Hastings.

We maintain an alert of news stories that mention Eric Liddle and two have come up this week:

Firstly a story reported by the BBC of a street in Cumbernauld originally named after Eric Liddell, but following a change of street sign the name was misspelled.

Secondly the story of Scottish Rugby Player Euan Murray who has refused to play on Sunday. Eric Liddell was also a Scottish Rugby International tema member.

Death of Charles Walker

It is with regret that we announce the death of Charles Walker, a former trustee of the Eric Liddell Centre.

Charles was also the person responsible for locating Eric Liddell’s grave in China and organised the memorial stone.

Rugby star a turn on (says The Scotsman)

As reported in The Scotsman, rugby star Scott Hastings will switch on the Christmas lights in Bruntsfield this year on behalf of Merchiston Community Council. The lighting ceremony will take place at Holy Corner on 10 December, with performances from the cast of the Church Hill Theatre's Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. The event starts at 6:30pm outside the Eric Liddell Centr

Donations will be taken for the Eric Liddell Centre daycare project for people with dementia.
